Volume 18 of the Flora of Australia contains 9 families, 45  enera and 322 species. They are spread over a wide geographical and ecological range, from coastal mangroves to alpine herbs, from desert plants to submerged aquatics. Two families, Haloragaceae and Thymelaeaceae, each contain over 100 species in Australia, the latter family including Pimelea (banjines or rice flowers). Onagraceae includes willow herb and evening primrose, while Combretaceae includes the  widespread tropical genus Terminalia.

Other families in the Volume are Podostemaceae (curious aquatic plants), Sonneratiaceae (mangroves), Lythraceae (tropical and temperate herbs and shrubs), Melastomataceae (tropical plants often with colourful flowers) and Gunneraceae (1 species in Tasmania).

Several plants are here described for the first time.
