Father Returns
Kan Kikuchi
Kikuchi was a master of the one-act play, focusing intensely on a single dramatic event and the characters embroiled in it, portraying it with utmost economy and tension. This brief play—it is less than thirty minutes long in performance—focuses on what happens to a family when the father, Sōtarō, a man who had abandoned the family some twenty years before, suddenly appears on the doorstep. The oldest son, Ken'ichirō, had assumed the father's role in his absence, and he is the one most upset by his return. Ken'ichirō is old enough to remember how his father squandered the family fortune and then ran off with another woman.
